About Mother’s Day
Did you know? Mother’s Day became an official U.S.
holiday in 1914. However, for several decades before, activists had
campaigned to institute a Mother’s Day of sorts to promote peace and
reconciliation. Ironically, Anna Jarvis, the woman whose persistence led
to the first official Mother’s Day, eventually lobbied against the
holiday due to the commercialism that soon consumed her original
intention of a day to sincerely honor a mother’s familial love and
sacrifice. Although presents are appreciated as tokens of love, most
mothers will still agree that the best gifts remain true to the day’s
original intention: handmade cards or trinkets, heart-written poems,
recollections of loving memories, a thoughtful breakfast in bed,
field-picked flowers, smiles of thanks, heartfelt hugs, and of course,
the magical words “I love you.” Happy Mother’s Day!
